Similar bills are expected to be debated this year in at least five states.

Critics say that while the measures are laudable, states should not mandate which products schools and agencies must buy, especially if they increase costs for governments that are struggling financially.

But supporters say the laws protect the environment and reduce the use of harsh chemicals that can harm workers' and children's health.

"The goal of the bill is to make schools and other public space less toxic and healthier for kids and the general public," said Democratic Rep. Cory Mason, sponsor of a bill in Wisconsin.

Nevada lawmakers watered down a bill last year that would have required green cleaning products in schools after school officials raised concerns about the cost and their lack of expertise in such cleaning. The bill signed by Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons only requires schools to use environmentally sensitive floor cleaners.

In Hawaii, Republican Gov. Linda Lingle last year vetoed a bill that would have required the Department of Education to give preference to products approved by Green Seal. She said it was inappropriate for the state to rely on certifications from "a single private organization." The Democratic-controlled Legislature overrode the veto.

Mason's plan, like those in other states, would require public buildings in Wisconsin to use cleaning and paper products certified as environmentally sensitive by the federal government or several private groups. But it also would encourage agencies to apply the products in ways that reduce water use and the amount of chemicals released into the air.

The Assembly natural resources committee voted 8-6 on Wednesday to approve the bill, which Republican critics said was unnecessary.

"It's an overreach of the state in telling local schools what they should do to keep themselves clean," said Rep. Jim Ott, R-Mequon.

The vote sends the measure to the full Assembly for approval. Senate sponsors of the bill have said they plan to seek approval after the Assembly.

Green cleaning products are widely available at prices comparable to traditional products. In some cases, manufacturers receive green certifications for products they have long had on the market. After a rocky start years ago, their effectiveness also is now comparable.

"There is no reason to pay a penny more to acquire green products. Plain and simple," said John Matthews, senior vice president for JohnsonDiversey. "And across the board, reputable companies are capable of making green products that perform well."

- Read More at ABC News

Top 25 Best Cleaning Tips Ever

Best cleaning tips we have ever heard!
Leave a comment and let us know your favorite or best cleaning tips ever!

Buffing a marble tabletop with nano polish leaves a thin, invisible film that helps reduce the risk of stains.

To stop bathroom mirrors steaming up, regularly rub a dry bar of soap over the surface and rub in with a clean cloth.

Stop clothes with thin straps falling off hangers by sticking small felt furniture pads onto the hanger just beyond where the straps sit.

To remove oil from silk clothing, gently rub cornflour into the area and lightly brush off. Cover the oil mark completely with more cornflour and leave to sit for a few hours. Shake clothing free of flour and then hand wash, or use a gentle machine cycle, using soap suitable for delicates.

To keep your car windows ice and frost free when left outside overnight in the wintertime, mix three parts vinegar to one part water, put it in a spray bottle and spray on the windows as needed.

To remove pollen from the stamen of flowers, take a piece of sticky tape about five centimetres long, gently press the sticky side to the pollen mark and lift off. Repeat with clean sticky tape as required. Do not try to brush it off.

To pick up small fragments of broken glass, press pieces of bread onto the affected area.

If you have an aquarium, save the water each time you change it and water your house plants with it. It’s full of nutrients and makes a great fertiliser.

To stop ants entering your house, draw a chalk line on the ground where you want them to stop. If you live in a rainy area where ants are a problem, you must re-draw the chalk lines each time it rains.

To deter silverfish, place whole cloves in wardrobes and drawers.

To get blood out of fabrics, use hydrogen peroxide. Apply it directly to the stain and then launder in the washing machine.

To remove body oil stains from collars and cuffs of coloured shirts and blouses, rub hair shampoo directly on the stains. Rinse out the shampoo, then wash the clothes as usual.

To prevent ash from flying everywhere when cleaning out a fireplace, use a spray bottle filled with microbial decontaminant to cover the ashes with a light mist.

To clean the bottom of the iron, sprinkle salt on the ironing board and iron back and forth.

To clean a microwave oven, add four tablespoons of lemon juice to one cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the oven. Then wipe them with a soft cloth.

To clean a stainless-steel sink, put the stopper in the sink with two denture-cleaning tablets and half fill with water; leave for several hours or overnight and the next day it should be sparkling. Then use the water to clean the draining board, too.

To remove marker pen off hard surfaces, spray on hair spray and then wipe it off.

To remove cat and dog hair from clothes and furniture, rub them with damp rubber gloves.

To clean your shower curtain, wash it in the washing machine with about one cup each of vinegar and bleach, some white towels and a normal amount of laundry detergent. Adding fabric softener will help keep the curtain clean. When the load is done, return the curtains to their place in the bathroom to drip dry. The wrinkles will disappear in a day or so. (Check your washing machine manual to ensure it’s okay to use bleach).

To clean glass windows, add about one tablespoon of cornstarch to about one litre of lukewarm water. Wet and a rag or squeegee, remove excessive water and wipe down glass as if using regular glass cleaner. Dry with either a soft cloth or paper.

To restore toilet bowls back to their shiny best, clean with old, flat Coke or Pepsi. To dissolve limescale, leave the soda overnight to soak. Then clean with a microbial bathroom cleaner.

Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to clean the tops and creases of Roman blinds.

Vacuuming a mattress, particularly along piping and crevices, removes dead skin cells that attract dust mites.

A good microbial decontaminate kills mould spores. Mix three drops in one litre of water and then use to wipe down areas susceptible to mould.

To get rid of the smell of garlic from your hands, rub against stainless steel – your sink is ideal. Then wash hands with soap and water and use a hand sanitizer.

The 5 Germiest Places to Be

By Jenny Everett, SELF magazine

Actress and celeb Megan Fox says that she has a phobia of germs—so much so that she won't use public bathrooms and recoils at restaurant cutlery. And, she's not the only woman who's freaked out by nasty bugs: In a Self.com poll, 75 percent of readers said they flush public toilets with their foot, and 63 percent avoid handrails on subways, buses, and escalators. 1 in 10 said they avoid shaking hands.

According to SELF contributor Maryn McKenna, author of Superbug: The Fatal Menace of MRSA, we should at the very least be cautious and aware. And she should know. She's a self-described "scary disease" reporter who's been following around Centers for Disease Control detectives for years, tracking drug-resistant staph (a.k.a. MRSA)—a bug that was once contained to hospitals and jails, but in recent years has made its way into the general public. When she wrote about MRSA for SELF, her inbox exploded with women who had somehow been affected by this potentially fatal bug.

Freaked out after reading Superbug (put us in Megan Fox's corner), we asked Maryn for advice on avoiding MRSA and bad bugs in general. Here's what the scary disease reporter had to say.

The Gym

"I never wear shorts to the gym anymore and it's not just because I have awful thighs! I know there will be a day when I am lost in my workout and I will sit on a bench without wiping it down. It's impossible to be mindful 100 percent of the time and to me it's not worth the risk. At the very least, it's important to change out of your gym clothes immediately after your workout. Staph reproduces in sweaty, salty environments, so the longer you stay in your gym clothes the more likely you are to be at risk."

Germs at the Party

"Staph—all Staph—lives on our skin and in our nostrils. We are the carriers. It can of course live on us without making us sick, but certain environments (an extreme example would be an Army barracks) increase risk of infection." If you're somewhere crowded and sweaty and hot, wash your hands often. "The hands are the single easiest way to transport bugs, but washing your hands is like whacking them over the head with a hammer. The friction of rubbing your hands together jars them loose, then the suds lift them away from your skin so the water can rinse them away."

Germs at the Makeup Counter

"I am a total sucker for makeup, but makeup sampling freaks me out. Never ever try something that people are putting their fingers in. That skin contact transfers all kinds of bugs." If you're sketched out, ask the woman at the counter if she has a new tester you can use. They almost always say yes because they want to make the sale.

Germs in the Kitchen

"These types of bugs are starting to make it into the food chain so it's important to wash produce well and use separate cutting boards for meat. It's not about being paranoid, it's about incorporating simple steps into the workflow of your day."

Wonder when to expunge that kitchen sponge from your life? It's best to chuck it after about a week, or when it starts to smell funky. Why? Unsafe bacteria are probably lurking on the surface and could spread to your food.

Germs at the Doctor's Office

"Drug-resistant staph really exploded in healthcare. So if you're going to the hospital for, say, an out-patient surgery (even something as simple as a mole removal!) ask them about how they keep the place clean. Challenge them about it."

If you don't want to get sick when surrounded by sneezers, wash your hands or slap on some sanitizer as often as you can. Cold bugs don't become strongly rooted on your skin, which means soap and water will literally wash them away. Alcohol-based sanitizers kill viruses outright, and they're as effective as hand washing. Keep a small bottle on your desk and in your purse.

How Flesh-Eating Bacteria Ravage the Body

From CBS - Serious flesh-eating infections of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as MRSA, affect 94,000 people in the U.S. each year and are linked to 19,000 deaths.

In 2005, Sandy Wilson was seven-and-a-half months pregnant when she got the infection. After an emergency C-section, her son wasn't affected. He's a happy 5-year-old today. But the disease horribly ravaged her body, hospitalizing her for nearly two-and-a-half years.

At one point, Wilson had an open cavity in her abdomen. She said in an exclusive interview on "The Early Show" she didn't think she'd be around to celebrate her son's first birthday.

"When I first looked at (the cavity), it was very hard," Wilson said. "And knowing what I had seen in the emergency room, I thought, you know, I can't live through that, because you can't live without your abdomen. An arm, a leg, you know, your vision, you can live without those. But you can't live without your abdomen. And I could read it on people's faces. They tried really hard to be encouraging, but I could read it."

A majority of the time she was ravaged by the flesh-eating bacteria, Wilson said, she was confused because of the anesthesia from her many surgeries.

"I had surgeries for the month or two after (the discovery of the infection) once a day, sometimes twice a day, going down to about every other day," Wilson said. "I didn't understand why I couldn't see (my son). So I was accusing everybody of keeping him away from me, and I also thought that he had died, and I had done something wrong. So I was being punished."

How did Wilson get the infection?

"They don't know," Wilson said. "I had roughly around 750 donors during that time, as well as a central line. I had an open C-section wound at the time. Also, I'm a pediatric emergency room nurse, so I could have been compromised with that prior to delivery."

CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton added, "This is really our worst nightmare in the medical profession. And I've seen this with a patient and we're talking here about a bacteria that is highly resistant to what we call our 'big gun' antibiotics."

She continued, "We always have staph bacteria all over us. About one percent of the population is what we say colonized with MRSA, usually, believe it or not in our nasal passages. And all it takes is either a sick person in the hospital or a person on the street with an open wound ... but that bacteria gets into the body, can become rampant, and gives you a condition called necrotizing fasciitis, and it is life threatening. About 50 percent -- one out of two patients -- with that condition can actually die from it."

Ashton explained the flesh-eating bacteria live in crowded places, such as daycare facilities or prisons, or anywhere there's close contact. A compromise in your skin, she said, gives an "in" for the bacteria to grow.

"Contaminated items is another factor," Ashton said. "Sporting equipment, things at health clubs, razor blades. Do not share those things. And lastly, of course, lack of cleanliness. In a hospital, we see lot of this, but it's also seen a lot in the community."

Ashton said washing your hands is one of the most important things to safeguard against this bacteria.

MRSA, CBS News co-anchor Erica Hill pointed out, can look in its early stages like a spider bite.

Ashton added the bacteria move fast from that point on: "When you start to get a fever, low blood pressure, that's an indication that it's systemic through your body."

CLEANpHIRST Cleaning Products Endorsement

After 7 years of daily using regular cleaning supplies that contained bleach, ammonia, etc. I developed respiratory issues that caused me to wear a face mask while cleaning. H1N1 flu continues to spread around the globe. All the hand-washing in the world may not be a match for the germs and viruses lurking on household surfaces. "There is a big appreciation for influenza that you can get it from your hands, but a lack of appreciation that viruses can be picked up on surfaces," said John Oxford, who heads the Hygiene Council and is a professor of virology at St. Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospital. A study was done to identify the dirtiest places in the home and tell us how to keep them germ-free.
CLEANpHIRST offers products that can be used daily around the house to stop the spread of bacteria and viruses. We also offer Alcohol-Free Foam Sanitizer that is extremely efficient in killing and eliminating any left-over germs that remain on your hands.

1. Kitchen Cloths and Sponges

People frequently use sponges or cloths to wipe germs from surfaces in the kitchen. As a result, 70 percent of kitchen sponges in U.S. homes failed the hygiene test by having high levels of bacteria, according to the Hygiene Council. The council recommends running sponges through the dishwasher regularly and washing kitchen cloths on the hot cycle in the washing machine.

2. Kitchen Faucets
Typically people wash their hands after handling raw meat in the kitchen, but they touch the faucet to turn on the water and do not think about the bacteria that they leave. The Hygiene Council found more than half of faucets in American homes are covered in bacteria. Use a disinfectant spray on faucets to kill germs.

3. Tub and Shower
Rubino identified the shower as the third germiest place in the home. The bathtub may have 100 times more bacteria than the trash can, according to an in-home bacteria study conducted by the Center for Hygiene and Health in Home and Community at Simmons College in Boston. The Hygiene Council recommends that showers and tubs be disinfected twice a week to get rid of dead skin cells left in the tub that can carry germs too.

4. Pet Food Dish
Most pet food dishes stay on the floor and do not get washed regularly. Rubino said "it's not practical to disinfect it every time, but wash your hands after you touch it. Pets -- we love them -- but they don't practice good hygiene."

5. Microwave Touch Screen
This spot is notorious for not getting cleaned. "You can put something in (the microwave) that is raw to cook it and could leave behind E. coli or Salmonella" Rubino said. He added that even though the food comes out cooked, the germs that can make you sick are left on the outside of the microwave for the next person to touch. It is important to wipe down the touch screen regularly, especially after cooking raw meat.

6. TV Remote
Imagine the typical couch potatoes -- watching TV while they absent-mindedly chew their fingernails, snack on food and flip through channels, leaving all kinds of bacteria on the remote. "Anything in your home that you touch a lot leaves germs behind," Rubino said. Make sure to sanitize the remote control regularly to prevent sickness.

7. Light Switches
Touching the light switch is practically unavoidable, but keeping it clean is not. The bathroom light switch can have as many germs as the trash bin, according to the Simmons College in-home bacterial study. Disinfect light switches twice a week or every day if a member of your household is sick.

8. Baby Changing Table
"When changing a baby's diaper, in all likelihood bacterial contamination will occur" Rubino said. He likens the changing table to a "dirty toilet seat" that the baby's whole body touches. During diaper changes, the baby wipes container, the diaper packaging, the trash can and anything around the changing area get contaminated with bacteria through touching after handling a dirty diaper. The baby changing table area should be cleaned often.

Visit our website: http://www.cleanphirst.com for a full list of our CLEANpHIRST products that specialize in eliminating bacteria and germs from these 8 areas!

Strong Enough for the Military, Safe Enough for Moms

We like these guy's enthusiasm, but their cleaning products and techniques could be a little better.
We recommend clearing the room with a Microbial Decontaminant to kill all the germs and the polishing up the brass, cleaning the windows for maximum visibility, and then holding the room with an effective all-purpose cleaner.

New Vinyl Record Cleaner

Check out a new product we just launched called B Side Record Cleaner:
http://www.bsiderecordcleaner.com/proddetail.php?prod=BsideBottle

B Side Record Cleaner Is Specifically Created For Cleaning & Protecting Records. Clothes-Shoes-Sports Gear

Everyone has encountered smelly sports gear, shoes, and clothing. Sneakers whose odor carries across a room. The smell from an equipment bag that reaches from the trunk of your car to the front seat. Gloves that have the power to transfer their odor to your hands. Wet clothes left stuffed in a duffel bag that could stand up on their own. Short of throwing them all away, what can be done? You can try to mask the odor with scents, but why not tackle the problem head on and go after the bacteria causes the odor? Besides, who wants them living there anyway? Through an entirely natural process an athlete's body secretes perspiration, oils, and other residues during exercise. These residues are the source of the problem because they are food for odor-causing bacteria. They allow bacteria to live. You can kill the bacteria with harsh chemicals and anti-bacterial agents, but new bacteria will just move in because there is still food to eat.

CLEANpHIRST offers you a great solution for keeping odor and bacteria off your Clothing-Sneakers-Sports Gear!

CleanpHirst Liquid Laundry: additive offers complete degradation of odors while effectively eliminating illness causing bacteria trapped in fibers.

Removes Mold, Mildew and Insubordinate Bacteria.

Will not damage, discolor, or fade fabrics.

Contains NO Alcohol, Chlorine bleach, ammonia, biocides, hydrogen peroxide, methanol, bleaching agents, petroleum or toxic chemicals.

It is non-carcinogenic, non-pathogenic, and does not contain any substances that are considered dangerous to use, handle or breathe.

CleanpHirst Powdered Laundry Detergent:

is an antimicrobial disinfectant, and moldicide which eliminates harsh odors and illness causing bacteria trapped in fibers. DepHyze Laundry Detergent is also (HE) High Efficiency. Dried oil can be very difficult to remove, and sometimes even the strongest commercial household cleaners can’t cut the grease. Sometimes the more you try to remove a sticky, greasy film, the stickier it becomes. Grease from cooking can easily make a mess on the stove top. If this grease is allowed to sit for long, it will harden and stick tenaciously to the stove's surface. Any food particles or dirt also get trapped in the hardened grease, creating a mess that can be very difficult to remove. In tackling grease on the stove top, it is helpful to keep in mind methods you use to tackle hard grease on cookware. The cleaning process is very similar. Make sure to use a little patience, and you'll have to do some scrubbing, but you will be able to get the stove clean and shiny with CLEANpHIRST products.

1.) It’s defined as an "acute incidence of indoor air pollution that can occur in closed or poorly ventilated offices and residences". Although you may not be able to see, smell, or feel the molecules of dirty air infiltrating your lungs and body, sick buildings harbor dangerous pathogens that you are inhaling with every breath and clinging to the largest organ on your body - your skin.In a building with poor ventilation or in an airtight building, chances are that you are at least at risk of any illness that one may have in the building. Many buildings that were constructed airtight with windows that do not open are vacuum sealed containers of invisible bacteria enveloping and entering your body all day long. Working in a "sick" building with or without symptoms may eventually lead to life threatening or crippling diseases. The symptoms listed above all relate to being exposed to high levels of bacteria, molds, mildew, and other types of germs floating in the air. If you are an office worker this serious issue can effect your present health, and even your future health if nothing is done to control it. CLEANpHIRST offers the products you are looking for to present to you boss/supervisor. It could be that you have an allergy to certain molds. Once in a while a mold problem in the home, which can be controlled, is the cause of allergies —kind of like dust. Perhaps you're not suffering from mold allergies, but you're looking at your bathroom wondering how it turned into a science project so quickly? During the winter months people have one of two problems: either the air in their home is too dry and it's causing problems, or the air in their home is too moist, and is causing mold to grow. During the summer months we have problems with excessive mold growth because of a higher relative humidity. CLEANpHIRST has the answer you are looking for!

Let's start with how to clean mold from your bathroom/kitchen. CLEANpHIRST highly recommends using our Microbial Decontaminant: this product specializes in removing mold and mildew. Moisture and steam from the showers, wet towels, damp floors and bathrooms combine with sweat and body odors saturate the facility and leave it smelling dirty, musty and downright disgusting! Odor causing microorganisms thrive in spaces such as locker rooms. They can be found not only in the cracks and crevices of tile, flooring, and walls but also on many surfaces, including counters, ceilings and cabinets. Ever wonder why after the space has been cleaned it still smells musty and dirty? That's because crevices and hard to reach surfaces are hard to get to and usually not part of your every-day cleaning process. Nonetheless, if you're detecting an odor that's a sure sign that odor causing elements are still present. And just remember, if you can smell it, others can too. Gym Managers: If you manage a gym with a locker room, this is important information to you to know! If you're the manager of a gym or workout facility that has a locker room, listen up! Studies have shown that a dirty facility (or the appearance of a dirty facility) will increase the rate of membership cancellations by, in some cases 30%. When word gets out that your facility is dirty, old or just appears that way, because of its smell or odor, that can be the kiss of death for your membership base.

Don’t you wish you had a product at your Fitness Center that you could get rid of odor, mold and mildew, clean sweat off equipment, mop the floor, clean the bathroom sinks, and safely wipe down the the hard to reach places that contain bacteria and viruses?

Now you do, CLEANpHIRST offers the first ever all purpose cleaner that works great for maintaining your fitness center's overall cleanliness. Product Overview: Nano Polish- Nano Protector, Defender, Binder, Sealer, Make’s my life easier for future cleaning miracle worker. School districts in Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Florida have been fielding inquiries from parents and staff about the safety of the alcohol-based sanitizers, and there have even been calls to ban the products outright. Apprehensions are the result of reports that there have been incidents of alcohol poisoning due to people, especially small children, ingesting the sanitizer. To be effective the products has to contain a minimum of 60 percent alcohol, which is comparable to the alcohol content in 120 proof whiskey. Experts say that it would only take three squirts from a bottle to make a preschooler very ill, and if the child managed somehow to consume more, there is enough ethyl alcohol in the bottle to kill. There has also been at least one instance in which a secondary school student was accused of trying to inhale the fumes from the sanitizer, in order to get high. Other worries are that students who have been using sanitizer on their hands could be in danger when plugging in electrical equipment in school laboratories: a spark could be created and the student would be burned, one school nurse claimed. Then there is the question of whether the bottles of sanitizer pose a fire hazard, themselves. Although fire safety personnel have confirmed that any quantity of alcohol does pose a fire hazard, they are not recommending any special safety measures for the smaller pump bottles many of us keep on our desks and in our homes. Larger containers of sanitizer, however, do have to be stored with caution. Schools that stock these containers would be expected to follow existing fire safety protocols. Although the possibility of abuse or accident does exist, I've got to say so far I haven't seen any statistics that indicate the frequency of such occurrences. Well, actually, that's not true: the school nurse was discussing a possibility, as are all those who are afraid of the fire hazards linked to products containing alcohol. As for accidental poisonings, all the discussion has been about toddlers and preschoolers who drank or licked the sanitizer at home. Finally, the abuse by the high school student was accused but appears not to have gone beyond that stage. So, overall, the likelihood of students getting hurt using hand sanitizer at school seems very low. The sanitizers do serve a useful purpose, however, in reducing transmission of communicable diseases in general. While droplet or aerosol transmission from sneezing and coughing are also important sources of infection, many of the illnesses we catch can be better controlled through proper hand washing, and in a school environment washing is not always possible. Many schools complain of not having enough sinks to allow for all students to wash up before snacks and meals, and after playing at recess. And sending students out of the classroom to wash after every sneeze would obviously disrupt learning.

If you are a concerned parent, teacher, or student CLEANpHIRST has the answer for you!

Alcohol-Free Foam Sanitizer is an extremely safe, effective, non-irritating, non-flammable, non-staining alternative to alcohol-based hand sanitizers. There is now no reason that students have to leave and disrupt the class after every sneeze or cough. The safest alternative to keeping students/teachers free from germs and bacteria would be to allow ONLY non-alcoholic hand sanitizer in schools. Products that contain alcohol pose a major threat for children, making it difficult for them to stay healthy. Completely removing hand sanitizer out of our schools shouldn't be an option. The risk of a fire or digestion of an alcohol based substance is reckless and extremely unsafe. A safe and more beneficial solution would be to replace dangerous hand sanitizers that contain lethal amounts of alcohol with CLEANpHIRST products which are Alcohol-Free. Keep Fire Safety First with CLEANpHIRST! Click the link below to check out our new products:

http://www.cleanphirst.com/store/products.asp?cat=11

Hand Sanitizer Safety

A 2005 study by the Children's Hospital in Boston compared illness rates across a study group of 292 families—half of them got hand sanitizers while the other half were given literature advising them of the benefits of frequent hand washing. The findings revealed that those families who used hand sanitizers experienced a 59 percent reduction in gastrointestinal illnesses and that the increased use of sanitizers correlated to a decreased spread of contagions in general.
Another study conducted at Colorado State University yielded similar conclusions, that alcohol-based hand sanitizers were as much as twice as effective as either regular soap or antibacterial soap at reducing germs on human hands. A Purdue University study, however, concluded that while alcohol-based hand sanitizers may kill more germs than plain or triclosan-based soaps, they do not prevent more infections that make people sick. Instead they may kill the human body's own beneficial bacteria by stripping the skin of its outer layer of oil.
The down side of the gel/alcohol products is their danger as poison, especially for young children who may ingest the gel by licking it off their hands or eating it directly out of dispensers. Purell and Germ-X, two of the leading brands, each contain 62 percent ethyl alcohol. While this alcohol is what gives the products their germ-busting power, it also puts kids at risk of alcohol poisoning. A few squirts of the hand sanitizer—which is equivalent to124 proof booze—is enough to make a kid's blood alcohol level .10, which is the equivalent of being legally drunk in most states.

So what's a concerned parent to do? CLEANpHIRST provides Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizer that is safe enough for everyday use in your home, school or workplace. The CLEANpHIRST technology stands alone as the world’s most powerful antimicrobial, cleaning, disinfectant and deodorizing agent. Infections, called shigellosis, sometimes go away on their own; in others, antibiotics can shorten the course of the illness.

Shigellosis typically affects kids 2 to 4 years old, and rarely infects infants younger than 6 months old. These infections are very contagious but can be prevented with proper hand hygiene and proper cleaning protocols.

Shigella Prevention Tips
Properly and consistently washing hands is the first defense in preventing cross contamination. A second defense is to use a hand sanitizer proven effective against bacteria such as Shigella , which is closely related to E. Coli.

If an outbreak occurs in a community such as a preschool or daycare, exclude all staff and students with diarrhea until 24 hours after diarrhea ceases.

Purchase CLEANpHIRST Products
CleanpHirst offers a wonderful, safe product that has been proven effective against Shigella. The CleanpHirst DECON MDF-500 is a bactericidal EPA registered product that eliminates common illness causing bacteria up to a Log 7 kill rate, 99.99999%. It is has a 1-0-0 HMIS rating, is safe to use and biodegrades rapidly, while still offering residual protection. A monthly or bi-monthly treatment using CleanpHirst DECON MDF-500 is an excellent preventive tool to a wide range of illness causing bacteria and viruses.

Help CLEANpHIRST Celebrate Earth Day!

Go Green!
Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever. While climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, it also presents the greatest opportunity – an unprecedented opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy now and for the future.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
You could be polluting your home without even knowing it. Some of the chemicals we use to clean affect the air inside our homes in negative ways. If you knew that when you were cleaning you were actually putting your family’s health at risk, wouldn’t you want to make a change? Many people believe that in order to be clean, the house has to smell like a bleach (or other cleaning product) factory. This is not the case at all. You can choose environmentally friendly cleaning products to keep your home clean and your family safe without the “knock you down at the door” smell of some of the commercial cleaning products on the market.

What Are Eco-Friendly Products?
You’ve seen ads for cleaners that are organic or “green.” These products comply with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for product ingredients that are safe for the environment. If these products won’t poison the earth, they are a lot safer for you don’t you think?

Think about it. About 50 to 100 years ago people cleaned in other ways. They didn’t have all the cleaning product choices found on grocery store aisles today. If they can do it so can you. Part of the return to environmentally friendly products is that they don’t use chemicals that can breakdown and affect the soil and water and ultimately animals and humans.

Purchase our eco-friendly products today!

Anti-bacterial soap under FDA scrutiny

<div style="background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; Federal health officials won't go so far as to say that, but on Friday they reported for the fourth week in a row that no states had widespread flu activity.

U.S. cases have been declining since October. An official with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says swine flu cases are still occurring and are likely to continue a while longer at some level.

But another expert said a future large wave of cases now seems very unlikely. The expert, Vanderbilt University's Dr. William Schaffner, said the epidemic has "one foot in the grave."

An estimated 70 million Americans have been vaccinated against swine flu through a government vaccination campaign that started in October. Meanwhile, an estimated 55 million or more got sick from swine flu and recovered, meaning they developed some level of natural immunity from the experience.

Combined, that means that 40 percent or more of the public has immunity to the virus. Such numbers will make it difficult for swine flu in its current form to reappear in a new wave, Schaffner noted.

Choose An Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizer

CLEANpHIRST™ Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizer is non-flammable unlike the hand sanitizer from the story below:

Firefighters responded to what seemed to be a routine alarm at the Square One Mall Monday evening, but a fire in the food court proved to be a puzzler.

Fire Chief James Blanchard said firefighters arrived in the mall's second floor food court a little after 9 p.m. to find a hand sanitizer unit fully engulfed in flames.

"It had spread up the wall and set off the sprinklers," he said. "We're still looking into how that got started."

He said the automatic hand sanitizer unit is about twice the size of a paper towel dispenser and is located just outside the restroom area in the corner of the food court.

Blanchard said the fire concerns him for two reasons. First, the machine is battery operated and not wired, so he's left wondering how the fire actually started.

Blanchard is also wondering if the fire is an isolated incident. The mall is owned by Simon Malls and Blanchard said it's his understanding that the dispensers are in all of their malls. If the fire proves to have somehow been started by the dispenser, there could be a recall issue.

"We're trying to see if anyone else has had a similar problem," he said. "It's kind of unusual. I've never seen anything like this."

Blanchard said no one was hurt during the fire, which was contained to the area just outside the restrooms. Firefighters made short work of putting out the flames but Blanchard said there was quite a mess left behind.

Click here for more information on CLEANpHIRST™ products

How To Prevent Norovirus

Six Steps To Protect Against The Spread Of Norovirus

Norovirus is the second most frequent cause of illness after the common cold. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, and occur between 24 and 48 hours after exposure. Norovirus can be life-threatening for the elderly and immunocompromised.

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) has six simple steps to protect families against noroviruses. These include:

Step 1. Practice Proper Hand Hygiene

Frequent hand washing is always the best defense. This includes washing hands for at least 15 seconds (sing the happy birthday song twice) or using hand sanitizers like CLEANpHIRST™ Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizer, which has a 99.999% kill rate; – rubbing until hands are dry.

Step 2. Clean with CLEANpHIRST™

If you’ve had the bug, use CLEANpHIRST™ Decon 3D to disinfect all surfaces. Wear disposable gloves, and don’t forget to maintain frequently used surfaces like door knobs and light switches with CLEANpHIRST™ Ultra Clean. After cleaning, dispose of or sanitize cloths in hot water and CLEANpHIRST™ Decon 3D.

Step 3. Food and Water Safety

Avoid joining an estimated 9.2 million cases of foodborne norovirus infections each year by preventing food contamination. Always wash raw food before eating, and don’t eat food prepared by someone who is ill until 2-3 days after symptoms have cleared.

Step 4. Don’t Air Your Dirty Laundry

Direct contact with a sick person is not required to contaminate soft surfaces. The norovirus can spread from a contaminated pillowcase to a clean towel in a pile of laundry. To disinfect laundry, wash with hot water and CLEANpHIRST™ Laundry Detergent, then dry on “high.” Add CLEANpHIRST™ Decon 3D to your wash for more heavily soiled items.

Step 5. Contain Outbreaks

Immediately quarantine those who are sick. Don’t forget to disinfect everything with CLEANpHIRST™ Decon 3D, and wear protective gloves while cleaning.

Step 6. Prevent Outbreaks

Don’t wait for an outbreak to occur to clean up. Ward off norovirus by maintaining a clean household and regularly disinfecting surfaces with CLEANpHIRST™ products.

Click here for CLEANpHIRST™ products & information
